came at the cost of individual freedoms. Is this true? Is it the case that the more government interferes, the less
our civil liberties? Libertarians point out that governments are necessary only in certain situations - the only situation involving homeland security. But in reality, most governments arent content to just
leave it at that. In the wake of 9/11, for example, President George W. Bush rightfully appointed a Homeland Security Department, dedicated to defending the home front. But It went
further than simply defending against actual attacks to trying to pre-empt attacks through use of everything from the Patriot Act (which authorized eavesdropping and wire-tapping without a court order) to
the allowing of limited torture of suspected terrorists. On an everyday level, the government is intruding in the airline industry. If there are any doubts about this, try getting on
an airline these days without having to take off your shoes and pile them, and all your personal belongings, into a gray bin while you walk through a metal detector
to ensure youre not a menace to the flying public. In the wake of 9/11, a frightened Congress gave more control to the Executive Branch, and were just starting to
find out what a mistake that might have been. Some of the liberties have gone by the wayside (being able to simply walk on board a plane, for example), but
some statistics are pointing out that we may not be safer when it comes to air travel than we were before 9/11.
