Millay demonstrates (in 14 lines) that while chaos is this amorphous, awful thing, it can be controlled by putting a finite limit and boundary on it. The poet does this
not only through use of 14 lines, but also through visual imagery and sounds. Visual Imagery Visual imagery is apparent even from
the first line St. Vincent Millay writes: "I will put Chaos into fourteen lines." The reason? Most people consider chaos as something out-of-control; as something that cant be tamed. But
by announcing her intention to control chaos by limiting it (fourteen lines), the reader sees the image of a strong, finite container by which something amorphous such as chaos can
be controlled. This nicely segues into visual aspect number two; that being the control of chaos "flood, fire and demon - his adroit
designs." In other words, the vision of chaos consuming itself as it burns itself out is very clear in these lines. The poet
further points out her ability to control chaos by limiting it by mingling it with "Order" and later on, her almost triumphant verdict: ""I have him." By limiting chaos with
these lines, the poet shows not only the ability to create order from chaos, but also to minimize chaos to practically nothing. Sounds
