good or bad. Denmark is run by a constitutional government, with the chief of state being Queen Margrethe II and the head of government being the prime minister (in this
case, Lars Lokke Rasmussen) (Denmark). Though the monarchy is hereditary and the prime minister typically appointed by the monarchy, based on legislative elections (Denmark). The capital is Copenhagen.
We spent some time on a discussion of the government because this is a good backdrop to a discussion about the countrys economy. According
to the CIA Factbook, the Danish economy is a market one that supports agriculture, smaller corporate industry and "an equitable distribution of income" (Denmark). The country survives via government welfare
and foreign trade (Denmark). Whats interesting is that Denmark, at this time, as not decided to join the European Union (probably for good reason, as its one of the most
stable economies in Europe), but its currency, the krone, is pegged to the euro (Denmark). An article in the Economist some
years ago points out the reasons why Denmark has yet to adopt the euro, and as with anything this monumental, there are several reasons. On the one hand, the article
notes, the Danes, who travel around Europe and run into the euro often (and like it), wouldnt have trouble adopting it. The countrys prime minister, however, doesnt want much, if
