talk about, but few people really understand what it is. With this paper, well try to shed some light on this very popular, but sometimes misunderstood, subject. Well then apply the information we learn to an actual example, that of promoting one of four employees to an upper-level position. According to Scriven and Paul (1987), critical thinking is an actual process by which an individual conceptualizes, applies, analyzes and evaluates information to reach a specific conclusion. This information is gathered from (or generated by) observation and experience, reasoning, communication, reflection and reasoning (Scriven and Paul, 1987). Once that information is gathered, then its analyzed, objectively, to come to the best conclusion for all concerned. Furthermore, critical thinking comes in two parts; information and belief-generating/processing skills and using those skills to guide behavior (Scriven and Paul, 1987). Richard Paul (2007) put it somewhat more succinctly when he pointed out that critical thinking involves thinking about thinking, while thinking in order to think better. Rather, instead of scattering thoughts at random, critical thinking allows the individual to better order his/her thoughts for a definite and workable conclusion. Now, lets pull this theory out of its theory and put it to work in the workplace. Lets say that we want to promote an employee at our office and the choice is between three or four of them. All four of them are fine individuals; theyve been with the company for many years and have proven their abilities and their loyalty.
