discrimination are rampant throughout society - among them is the racism from Texans (particularly along the Rio Grande Valley) to the Hispanic population. Through his writings and novels, Americo Paredes
outlines not only the discrimination faced by Texas Hispanics from anglo Texans, but also the rampant discrimination within the Texas Hispanic community. These border dwellers also were looked down upon
from Mexicans, who considered their Texas counterparts as somehow inferior because they had become too "anglicized." In his short story "Hammon and
the Beans," Paredes outlines the distinct separation between Texas Hispanics and their American neighbors. When he spoke of his experience at Fort Jones, he points out that "we lived, we
and the post, side by side with the wire fence in between." Furthermore, the soldiers at Fort Jones "did not wander into our neighborhood, and none of us ever went
into Fort Jones." The one exception to this was Chonita, whose only English was "Give me the hammon and the beans!" in mimicry of the Fort Jones soldiers. The irony
is, of course, that Chonita dies at the end of the story. The one link between the American culture at Fort Jones and the small barrio aligning it dies at
the end, most likely killed by her stepfather, a Hispanic, through sheer ignorance and neglect. The fact that no one seems to no Conitas cause of death sheds a great
deal of light on the whole idea of "community" (or lack thereof, in this case). The narrators father bemoans the fact that hed never even realized she was sick. So
the one girl who became the link between the Hispanic community and the Fort Jones anglos died, while her stepfather laughed and celebrated.
