needs. But what happens when there is a threat to communism? What were seeing now is that the society so carefully crafted
to serve the communist government is under fire, particularly in the urban areas which have had a taste of Western culture. That, plus the economic boom China is experiencing is
leading to what some experts are calling the "Americanization of China." The result is that the younger Chinese generations are disregarding the more traditional approach of their communist-oriented parents and
grandparents, which could ultimately lead to a cultural revolution, if it hasnt done so already. Much of the literature points out that
some of the driver of Chinese youths almost contempt for the "older ways" is economic development, particularly in the major cities such as Shanghai and Beijing (Moore, 2005). Even the
government has kicked in as well, with economic reforms beginning in the 1980s, and in the newer, more lenient attitude toward private enterprise (Moore, 2005).
But Moore and others point out that the "millenials," as theyre dubbed, are the children of the Cultural Revolution generation -- and because of globalization, the millennials
have different viewpoints than their parents. The most drastic viewpoint is that of individualism versus collectivism, a precept of the communist party (Moore, 2005). Moore dubs this "ku," or slang
for the more westernized "cool" (Moore, 2005). Along with the individualistic nature of ku, comes a type of self-indulgence; in other words, doing something for oneself, rather than thinking of
the collective (Moore, 2005). This would have been unheard of even 15 years ago in China, but is common in the millenials of China today.
