book, AMERICAN MANHOOD takes the reader on an in-depth journey that the male image has taken since the 1800s. Man is the result of the popular culture, Rotundo seems
to state. By the end of the late 1800s the idea of the perfect man was typified by what people recalled of the Greek images which included nationalism, heroicism, and
strength. However, Rotundo goes on to state that by the early part of the 1900s, feminism, the literary renaissance that was taking place, and new political atmospheres had begun to
challenge this definition. Rotundo reports that an anti-male movement began to sweep through the country and the stereotype began to crumble. However, the advent of the First World War brought
back the necessity for a strong and aggressive model for male behavior. While one has to wonder at this comment by Rotundo, it is possible to say that
the innate desire by the male of any species is to dominate, control territory and protect/defend what they consider to be theirs. Competition for food, mates and territory seems to
be a norm, whether one is discussing a Marmot or a Human. However, that being said, of course, there is a lot more going on in the psychological profile of
the human being, as opposed to any of the other species. So, what can be inferred from this authors discussions, is that being a man is more than biology, though
