States since the end of the Second World War (1945). While something like this could fill up a book, let alone a
question for a term paper, well touch on a few highlights. One invention that has had a huge impact on both cultural and social change in the U.S. is the
television set. During the mid-1940s, TV was considered a novelty, something that fights were shown on and maybe a soap opera or two. But people got their news -- and
entertainment -- from the radio and newspapers (which is why radio newsmen such as Edward R. Murrow were so revered for their ability to paint pictures with their words). But
as television became more advanced, and television shows because more prevalent, society adapted. Instead of being a novelty, television became almost a necessity. How did it change culture? People wanted
to be like the actors and actresses they saw on television. Furniture was developed, specifically for TV watching(easy chairs and fold-away TV tables). Even food was developed for ease of
watching TV -- Swansons TV Dinners for example, offered single-size "meat and potato" frozen meals that could be cooked, carried and eaten to the TV table, without the bother of
having to serve it. These days, of course, television is very much ensconced in the fabric of our lives, with most homes having at least one, if not more, sets
and hundreds of channels from which to choose. Another cultural change that has taken place has been in music. The reason why
