This book is an astute study of the mindset of the restless British colony and offers insight into what ultimately led to the Revolutionary War.
Primarily, Johnson states that the political and personal were not necessarily separate entities, but rather social structures, and were dictated by ones political ties and positions. In
other words, the most elevated position one could hold was that of a politician during these times. Basic concepts in this book are that the political structure was such that
it reflected basic social structures and that the people, by and large, were still under the influence of parliamentary representation and had been oppressed by the British Crown. The end
of the Revolution did not help matters as some had hoped. In fact, in many ways the Revolution made things worse for the minority creditors. The colonies, from the
beginning, were rebellious to the distant British Crown. Perhaps it was the distance that made the early colonists bold, and perhaps it was the desire for self rule. No matter
what the reason, Johnson states that from the beginning American colonists vexed their British benefactors terribly. The primary reason is that the American colonies refused to behave as colonists ought.
The sole reason for a colony (in the eyes of the sponsoring Nation at least) was to provide greater wealth to the mother country. Exports outpaced imports, Johnson reports,
and as a such a favorable balance was maintained in which great wealth began to pour into the new colonies. Several practices were utilized to achieve and maintain this favorable
balance, Johnson writes. Imports could be decreased if more of the goods consumed inside the country were being produced domestically. Therefore, the government would encourage the production of domestic goods
