This movie asks the question: Is love merely going through the motions? Is beauty a trap? Are women to be only seen as objects of pleasure? Sam Mendes 1999 film, American Beauty, featured a classic tale of a man experiencing a mid-life crisis. The film featured Kevin Spacey, Annette Bening and Mena Suvari as the classic triangle. If this was all the movie was about, however, it would have fallen flat on its face and been viewed as tasteless at best. However, with extraordinary sensitivity, Mendes embraces the age old question: What is love? How does one find it? How does one know if one has the real thing? And the largest question of all being, What has modern society done to dilute the meaning and experience? In American beauty the last year of the protagonists life are examined. He feels that his life is falling apart. It is. But what has brought it to that point seems to be the vehicle which drives the movie forward. This movie is outstanding in that it dissects what exactly makes a person truly beautiful. And it is about how that beauty can be destroyed, sometimes inadvertently, by the limitations and confines placed on the individual, and even sometimes the lack of confines. The overall metaphor of this movie is the symbol of the rose. At one point a neighbor asks how the roses are grown so red and healthy. She replies eggshells and Miracle grow. This is particularly poignant in that both eggshells and miracles are sought in this movie. In American Beauty, Lester and his wife Caroline are as dysfunctional in their relationships.
