Ends Well". However, if one is looking for the typical happy ending to this Shakespearian play, one may be shocked at the darker overtones. Though the heroine does obtain the
object of her desires, it has to be said that it comes at great price. The darkness in this play is often referred to as a problem play. There
is a pervasive bitterness which seems to thread its way throughout this play, insinuating various themes about human relations and the manipulation of men by women. However, for all of
these overtones, this play is not considered a tragedy. There are no outwardly bad villains, though Parolles comes closest. Most of the characters are decent characters, neither driven by avarice
or zealousness. Helena is in love with Bertram and will go to great lengths to make him her husband: "Twere all one That I should love a bright particular
star And think to wed it, he is so above me" (Act 1, Sc.1, Li. 90-92). What makes this play a problem play is the dark and foreboding
message that seems to come in regard to sexual love. The play is bawdier than most Shakespeare plays in that even the main characters (often considered noble) even succumb to
the ribald joke or two. Of course, considering that the entire play revolves around Helenas ability to get her promised husband into bed and to become pregnant by him, it
is no wonder that the entire play pokes fun and makes cynical remarks about the nature of sexual relations. For example, the fact that Helena is able to fool Bertram
in the dark seems to suggest the ignorance of the average man to any woman he finds in his bed. In effect saying that "all women are the same" to
