began his career as an entomologist (bugs) and a zoologist (working at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind.), hes best known for two things. The Institute for Sex Research at Indiana
University (now called the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction), and his Kinsey Reports (one for men and one for women) - all of which meant that
Kinsey "single-handedly created the academic field of sexology" (Wikepedia, 2004). Though many sexologists today describe Kinsey admiringly as a pioneer and a
bold man for bringing to light that which was pretty much in the darkest consciousness of human minds, at the time in which he lived (during the 1940s and 1950s),
his work stirred up more controversy than admiration. While those who supported him claimed he helped spearhead the sexual revolution of the 1960s with his reports, the right-wing Christians attacked
him for what they considered as "immoral and dangerous research" (Wikepedia, 2004). But for all of his glory and controversy, Kinsey was
also known as a controlling individual, who didnt tolerate disagreement and who was a tyrant to his staff (Stevenson, 1999). He considered himself the expert in all areas (music included)
- but his dominating persona was not very favorable to colleagues (though he could be friendly and helpful on certain occasions) (Stevenson, 1999).
From all accounts, though Kinsey was not likeable as a human being, many people are willing to forgive him his quirks, due to the light he shone on sexuality.
