Institute of France, was best known for his writings and his realistic assessments about freedom and democracy. One of his books, Democracy in America, continues to be widely quoted, as
many of the ideas it espoused back in the middle of the 19th century remain true today. The seeds of the book were born on a visit that de Tocqueville
made to the U.S. in 1940. During that time, he spent much effort studying American culture and democracy, then shared his results with the rest of the world. One thing
that he mentioned that placed the United States of the time in a negative light was that racism was a normal state of events in the United States, and that
the United States could never hope to outgrow its hatred toward the black man. Examining U.S. history at the time, there were
solid reasons for de Tocquevilles comments. In 1840, slavery in the South was a given, and although the anti-slavery abolitionist movement had not yet gained much steam, horror stories abounded
about mistreated black men and women who were dragged to America from the shores of Africa to be placed in chains and sold to the highest bidder. Once at their
new "homes," black slaves suffered. Plantation overseers thought nothing about whipping slaves to make them work faster (they werent considered human, but rather, property), and, in many cases, families
were split apart because slaves were sold to other plantations. While conditions against black people in the South were horrendous, they
were much worse in the North. Its true that people didnt own Northern blacks; instead, they faced terrible discrimination and were despised by most of the white people in areas
