Ever since Bill W. acknowledged in the mid-20th century that hed become powerless over alcohol and then launched a group to deal with the issue, Alcoholics Anonymous and other "12-Step" groups have sprung up. The goal of these groups is to allow the individual with an addiction to acknowledge there is a problem, turn to a higher power for help in dealing with the problem, make amends to those he/she might have hurt while under the influence and ultimately, to help others who are dealing with certain addictions. The other day, I attended an AA meeting to determine whether this would benefit my clients who have alcohol addictions. I was a little apprehensive to begin with -- the only idea I had of AA were comic sketches dealing with it. I also feared that, with all the focus on a higher power, this might be a very religious group that would shun those who might not share their beliefs. I learned that my fears were groundless. The minute I walked in the door, I was greeted by a pleasant-faced woman who called herself Dottie. She welcomed me quietly, told me I could participate if I wanted, but it wasnt required. "Take what you need and leave the rest is our motto," she said. "Everyone has their own path when it comes to dealing with addictions. Were just here to listen and give support because weve all been to that awful point. Rock bottom, where only death seems preferable." About 10 others were in this meeting, all of whom were very well-spoken, friendly and well-dressed. One woman cracked a joke and others laughed.
