the early 1970s that attempted to explain aviation safety and how it involves a system. The theory behind SHEL was that an aviation safety system was interlinked, and when all
of the parts worked with one another (more specifically, at least three of the components), then aviation safety could be met (Edwards, 1972).
The software part of the system was the non-material part, which focused on procedures, regulations and practices (Edwards, 1972). The hardware section, in the meantime, takes into account the
equipment, the technical systems and the tools at hand to help in a situation (Edwards, 1972). The environment takes into account external influences (Edwards, 1972). It also counts policies, restrictions
and other non-tangible factors that might go into a decision (Edwards, 1972). Finally, the human factor, or liveware, is self-explanatory. This is
the human factor in any situation, including operators, managers and clients, anyone that is involved in the productive processes (Edwards, 1972). The
SHEL model was developed to explain and express the relationships between and interdependencies of different systemic components, as well as the human components (Edwards, 1972). This latter is under direction
of environmental conditions (Edwards, 1972). Furthermore, the model points out that any change of a component impacts the others (Edwards, 1972). For
example, if a change in hardware, i.e., a new computer, is introduced into an office situation, it has an impact on the environment (people either like it or they dont)
and the live ware component (people will need to learn how to use the machine, if they hope to get any work done).
