innovative offering. For this particular exercise, Ive selected the airline industry because of the product it offers. The airline industry is an interesting
one, because it consists of a few major players that control various routes. Furthermore, there is little differentiation in the product itself: Unless consumers are fixated on a particular airline
companys loyalty program, brand identity doesnt typically mean much of anything. Certainly, on an international basis, certain airlines are affiliated with certain countries (i.e., Qantas with Australia, British Airways with
the United Kingdom, Lufthansa with German, Air France with France and so on). But for those traveling domestically throughout the United States, consumers examine aspects other than brand, such as
price and convenience. Because an airline is an airline is an airline (i.e., one aircraft is very much like another), innovation needs to come through more intangible means.
If we conduct an environmental scan, we note that issues facing the industry include rising fuel and labor costs, increased governmental regulation and competition
for passengers. Focusing on the latter is likely going to provide the best path toward innovation for these airline companies (given that rising fuel and labor costs and increased regulation
are, for the most part, out of these companies control). As such, it makes sense to examine consumer behavior as it pertains to purchasing an airline ticket.
One area, as mentioned above, is price. Consumers prefer a lower, rather than a higher, price when it comes to airfare, but the problem is that
