Auto Immune Deficiency Disorder (AIDS) has had a devastating affect on the world as a whole. Africa in particular has suffered tremendously from this fatal disease. AIDS in Africa has both epidemiological and sociological consequences. The disease obeys no socioeconomic, geographic, political, or racial lines of demarcation. Kenya, Uganda, and South Africa have been particularly hard hit (Osborne, 2005). In South Africa alone government-provided statistics reveal five million people are HIV positive (The Lancet, 2005). This translates into one in every nine South Africans are HIV positive (Daniel, 2005). South Africa, in fact, holds the title for the highest AIDS rate in the world (AP Worldstream, 2002). Some five thousand people die weekly from AIDS-related causes (MacGregor, 2002). While there are numerous statistics quantifying the impacts of AIDS on South Africa, the full impact of the disease is difficult to ascertain because of the stigma that is associated with the condition. Deaths that are in actuality HIV/AIDS related are frequently misreported out of concern for the family members and associates that an infected individual is leaving behind (The Lancet, 2005). A tremendous percentage of these deaths are reported as deaths from pneumonia or tuberculosis, for example, when the real cause is AIDS. The Lancet (2005, 546) reveals that a study designed to quantify the misclassification of 2000-2001 HIV/AIDS deaths found that: "the number of deaths related to HIV/AIDS was likely to be almost three times as high as that published in the Governments statistical report compiled from death certificates" ...
