human state nurses are able to administer some amount of comfort to those with terminal illness such as HIV/AIDS. Dorothea Orem, a nurse, developed a model of self care
which allowed the patient to be an active factor in maintaining health and facilitating recovery. In the Greater Orlando area there is a strong prevalence of HIV/AIDS cases. It is
thought that the OREM model may be a successful component in the total healthcare concept, care, and treatment of those patients who are suffering from the effects of AIDS/HIV. OREMS
MODEL Dorothea Orem observed that there are basically three types of care that a nurse provides. There is the total care role, where the
nurse provides all the direction required for the recovery of the patient. Next there is the partial care role, where the nurse and the patient partner in sharing the responsibility
for recovery and care. Lastly, there is the patient care role where the nurse acts as a consultant and educator for the patient, aiding them in assuming primary responsibility for
their own care and recovery(Kelley 1996). This nursing model is client centered, rather than physician centered in that it involves the patient and
informs the patient on the various options available to them for aiding their own recovery and return to health. Many of the managed health care systems embrace this philosophy as
it allows them more time to see new cases, instead of treating chronic ones that can be better maintained in a home setting. Likewise, it frees the physician to continue
to recommend and be a part of an outpatient care system which saves the average person money on their healthcare premiums and out of pocket expenses.
