Syndrome (AIDS) has been in the headlines for over two decades. AIDS gained its name because HIV attacks the human immune system making it ineffective in fighting disease or
sickness caused by microbial organisms. The virus currently infects some forty million people (Moore, 2004). In a September 15, 2004 article in the Houston Chronicle, La Monica Everett-Haynes
informs us that in Harris County Texas alone almost 10,300 new HIV cases have been recorded since 1999! This number is shocking in itself but it is even more
shocking when we consider Everett-Haynes qualification that it doesnt even include new cases of HIV on college campuses! That, coupled with the lack of awareness that exists on these
campuses, equates to an extremely dangerous situation and one that is simply inexcusable in todays tenuous world. The many misperceptions that exists regarding
AIDs on college campuses include some that are so preposterous that they would be amusing if the risks werent so great. Students believe, for example, that Listerine is an
effective tool in preventing the contraction of the HIV virus after oral sex. Others believe that even if they contract the virus they can be treated with new medications.
The facts regarding HIV and AIDS are unfortunately much more disturbing. First, Listerine an ineffective remedy in killing the HIV virus once it has entered the human body.
Second, while there are new drugs that some are even hailing as wonder drugs, those drugs are serving not just the positive purpose of extending the lives of those
with HIV but also the negative purpose of insuring that there are more avenues of infection for those that practice unsafe sex! In other words more people are alive
