loved-ones death. Our society puts a great deal of stock into employment, no doubt left over from the Puritan work ethic that the Pilgrims brought over on the Mayflower.
In one sense, the loss of a job is the loss of resources necessary to fulfill the basic needs of food, clothing
and shelter. But there is more to a job loss than simply providing the basics; if losing a job was only connected to the fact that a person wouldnt be
able to meet his/her basic needs, almost any kind of employment would do the trick. Many people put a great deal of
stock into their jobs. For them, their jobs are their lives, and when theyre let go, they feel as though a part of their life has been cut away. They
feel as though someone has actually sucker-punched them, that someone has taken something precious away from them. Because so many employees self esteem is wrapped up in their job (and
