was little in the way of a level playing field for Black people, especially in a predominantly White world. Doors needed to be opened for qualified Blacks, and affirmative action
mandates, requiring that government positions take into account Blacks in addition to Whites for hires, was a milestone in helping to level that playing field. One misunderstanding about affirmative action
legislation is that private businesses were required, by law, to hire quotas of Blacks. This wasnt the case, but many private businesses did take on the mantle of "diversity" because
the tide was swinging toward a multicolored - and multicultural - society. However, these days, things have changed. Just about anyone and
everyone can claim he or she is a minority - Diane Nagel (2001) points out, quite rightly, that the beneficiaries of affirmative action programs include close to 70% of the
population, including minorities other than Blacks, and women, meaning almost anyone with a good enough story can make uses of affirmative action. This begs the question: Is affirmative action outdated
or still necessary? There are those who claim that, despite the many strides made by Blacks (or African-Americans as many like to
call themselves), as well as other minorities, it still remains a White Mans world. Mostly older, white men control corporate wealth. But dont we have a more diverse workforce than
in times past? Yes - but Burns and Schapper (2008) argue that there is a large difference between diversity and affirmative action. Affirmative action starts from the assumption that there
