have not fully escaped the legacy of slavery and never will without some sort of great sacrifice on both sides of the issue. Given this, then, along come those few
individuals who are anomalies unto themselves. Colin Powell is one such enigma. For centuries there has been a great gaping wound where race relations is concerned. Many remedies have been
tried to heal this wound. Everything from money to government programs have attempted to right wrongs which occurred centuries ago. And, ironically enough, it hasnt helped and in fact, in
many cases, it has only served to fester the wound. Affirmative Action was enacted to provide an equal footing to people of color and women. This leveling of the playing
field was to give women and minorities a chance to compete in what had been a largely white male dominated workplace and educational environment. The NOW organizations states that even
today, many years after the influence of affirmative action, white men hold over ninety percent of the high-level corporate jobs. This is with the existing affirmative action laws in place.
Consider how much lower they might be if affirmative action were not in force. And yet, there are those who seem to make it regardless of affirmative action and not
because of it. What makes Colin Powell different from many people of color is that he managed to make the system work for him. He will be the
first to state that affirmative action aided him along the road to his success, but upon examination of his personal story it becomes evident that he was a person that
took advantage of those support systems which were open to him, regardless of whether or not affirmative action was involved. For example, he joined the military at a very young
