also a very complex and diverse topic as well. Welfare, for the most part, was initiated in the years that were affiliated with the Great Depression. There were so many
people in need of financial assistance that the government set up the programs that would enable them to survive. The most famous, and perhaps most widely used of these programs
is AFDC (Aid to Families with Dependent Children). In more recent years another program has developed, a program geared to get people off welfare and into the work world. It
is the Welfare to Work program. The following paper examines the two programs individually and then presents and examination of how the two combined are essentially the foundation of the
social welfare service in the United States today. AFDC Program As mentioned in the introduction, the AFDC program was instilled to enable survival for families with children. It
was deemed necessary in light of the devastation caused by the Great Depression when people had no work, no food, no homes, and no money. It enabled people to buy
food and pay for housing so that they could survive. Through the years, however, it has apparently become something that many people simply rely on and pass that reliance down
to the next generation. It has also become a system that many see as clearly abused. For an individual on AFDC the system or program can provide the most
basic of needs. A single mother who is trying to raise her children, and perhaps only capable of having a minimum wage job because of education, may not be able
to afford childcare and as such welfare, or AFDC, gives her the ability to provide for her children and perhaps hope for better in the future. For many mothers it
