were suing the companies because they were dying from cigarette-related deaths. Perhaps more importantly, Big Tobacco came under fire for allegedly targeting their advertisements to kids.
No, the tobacco companies didnt target kiddie magazines to promote their messages, nor did they advertise their wares on kid television shows (even before 1970,
when the tobacco ban on TV advertising went into effect). But it was believed that billboards and characters invented by the tobacco companies were attractive enough to kids, so that
when they became older, theyd buy those cigarettes. As a result of a settlement, Big Tobacco has had to issue advertising promoting awareness, to kids, of the dangers of cigarette
smoking. Whether or not kids respond to certain types of cigarette ads is still up for speculation. Still, it brings up an
interesting question, that about ethics and advertising. On the one side are the advertisers, who are trying to make a buck for their clients with splashy ads that appeal. On
the other are the consumer advocates who claim the ads lead to harmful consequences. Then back to the advertisers, who point out that parents should educate their kids to watch
ads responsibly, and that the parents are certainly welcome to say "no" when kids badger them for something. But then again, these are the same advertisers who count on the
"whine factor" of kids when it comes to badgering their parents. The advertisers believe that if the kids beg and plead enough for something, that the parents, just to shut
the kids up, will break down and buy that something. Not cigarettes. But other things ranging from sugary soda pop, to the latest toy, to sugary cereals.
