post-retirement benefits - these are all something that managerial accountants need to understand and that financial accountants need to report. Pension accounting, especially,
is its own world. Though the mention of pension accountants gives rise to guys wearing green eyeshades and cutting retirement checks, there is actually a great deal more to such
accounting practices than ensuring retired employees get the money they put into a fund (and that was put into that same fund by their employers.
For one thing, pension accountants need to have a good understanding if monies that are dedicated toward an employees retirement. The basics of all this involves a
pension plan which, in its most basic form, is a retirement plan offered by an employer. With such a plan, an employer makes contributions into an account or a pool
of funds which is, in turn, invested on the employees behalf. Many times, employees will set aside part of their salaries into that same pool of funds - a lot
of times, the funds are taken directly from their paychecks and then added to the particular pool of money. Then, when the employee retires, he or she receives the funds
from the plan. A 401(k) is considered a type of pension plan. Now, the money doesnt just sit there and accumulate -
pension fund advisors take that money and invest it into what seems like sound investments and stable equities. We know, of course, this may not always be the case. The
