Put simply, all students display behaviors, at one time or other, that are consistent with a diagnosis of ADHD, but student with the disorder display this behavior virtually all the time and seem incapable of focusing their attention for the length of time required to learn. The fundamental symptoms of ADHD are "inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity" (Woodward, 2006, p. 363). According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Man of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, published by the American Psychiatric Association, before making a diagnosis of ADHD, the behavioral symptoms should be evident in two or more settings in the childs life and should be longitudinal, that is, observed for at least six months before the diagnosis (Woodward 363). Student who have been diagnosed with ADHD can profit from "prevention-oriented behavior-management and classroom- management strategies" (DuPaul and Stoner 170). In other words, these students require a variety of both prevention and intervention strategies, such as, the continuing to remind and emphasize the importance of classroom "rules, routines and expectations" in an ongoing manner; continuous monitoring of their basic skill level; and also teaching them how to organize and study academic materials (DuPaul and Stoner 170). The precise techniques selected by the teacher are dependent on both the age and the developmental level of the child, as well as the curriculum for that particular grade. However, educational literature does offer a wealth of ideas on this topic.
