Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) and its associated Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) have been misunderstood, misdiagnosed, over-medicated, under-treated and all other aspects of being poorly handled over the years. There is evidence that ADHD/ADD is not overdiagnosed to the extent it was in the past, leaving those in whom it is diagnosed often to receive the attention they need. When it was so often overdiagnosed, those truly suffering from its effects often went without treatment. A benefit of working with those needing attention is that it has been possible to more narrowly target assessment and intervention techniques and approaches over the past several years. Prevalence Even though diagnosis tends to be more accurate than in the past increasing numbers of children are being diagnosed with ADHD, so many that some claim that ADHD still is being grossly overdiagnosed and that it surely does not exist in the proportions that psychologists, health care professionals and even the lay press claim. The response of those involved is that the condition is so pervasive and varied that its many forms and degrees are just now being understood. "According to the National Center for Health Statistics, approximately 6.7% of children aged 5 to 17 were reported to have ADHD in 1997-2000" (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, 2005). It is much more common in boys than in girls, at a rate of about three to one (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, 2005).
