Lesesne and Perou (2007, S99), in fact, describe ADHD as one of the most common psychiatric disorders in childhood. Many, however, question the legitimacy of ADHD and consider it
a cultural phenomenon rather than a true psychological disorder warranting the scale of treatment that has been devoted to it. The intent of this paper is to explore those
questions, to determine whether ADHD is a real disorder or a fake, whether it has a true biological basis or is simply the product of a combination of overzealous parents,
frustrated educators, and an unethical pharmaceutical industry that is interested more in promoting drug sales than attending to the true needs of our nations children. Visser, Lesesne and Perou
(2007, S99) observe that effective mental health treatment in youth is complicated because: "parents and
guardians often act as gatekeepers to identification and treatment . . . A growing number of studies have evaluated the individual-, family-, and school- or community-level factors associated with receiving
a diagnosis of ADHD" According to recent statistics, ADHD affects between three and seven percent
of children under the age of eighteen and presents a significant obstacle in the educational environment in particular (Reid, Trout, and Schartz, 2005, 361). Between five and eight percent
