Sometimes he did. He would run around madly from one activity to another, never paying much attention to what he was doing or what he would do next
and would try to bring as much stimulation into his life as possible (including trying to ride the cow and jumping off the roof). His parents would look at
him, shake their heads and mutter, "Boys will be boys". They were wrong. This young man probably has a neurologically determined developmental disorder known as ADHD or attention
deficit hyperactivity disorder. ADHD is neither a rare or new disorder. It has been around at least as long as parents and teachers have been pulling their
hair out over the antics of problem children. Recently, however, the disorder has come under debate because of the prevalence and prevailing mode of treatment. Many believe that
America is simply overmedicating the youth in order to quell a sense of adventuresome ness and, or, curiosity. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American
Psychiatric Association (1994), the disorder may be classified into three subtypes: the disorder can be of predominantly inattentive type, predominantly impulsive/hyperactive type, or it can be the combined type.
These subtypes are characterized by three core symptoms: Inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. In the vernacular of the classroom, the child is bouncing off the walls". The distinction
that makes ADHD a disorder is the presence of significant problems with inattention and, or, hyperactive and impulsive behaviors. The word significant refers to behaviors that are maladaptive and
inconsistent with expected behavior based on age and development. The disorder makes it extremely difficult for the child to function adequately at home, school, and, or work.
