Findings have determined that comorbidity - the co-occurrence of at least two different disorders - is becoming more and more prevalent; according to the Cleveland Clinic, approximately twenty to thirty percent of ADHD children also struggle with a particular learning disability, with dyslexia being one of the most common (The Cleveland Clinic, 2004). There exists a strong correlation between ADHD and the learning disabled based upon the Journal of Genetic Psychologys article entitled "Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: An Evolutionary Perspective." Diagnosing learning disabilities requires specific academic testing. Shelley-Tremblay et al (1996) illustrate how studies have demonstrated this connection to be significant in the overall research findings as they relate to each disorder individually. With continued study, researchers will become significantly better equipped to definitively determine the causes of ADHD, ultimately establishing a more accurate means by which to deter the known culprits, whether that is to address its existence through genetic transmission, cultural and/or economic reasons, cranial trauma or the HIV virus. Studies conducted by Chelune, Ferguson and Richard and Lou, Henriksen and Bruhn all suggest the theory of "frontal lobe underactivity" (Shelley-Tremblay et al, 1996, p. 443) as being directly related to ADHD. Additionally, research has shown the connection between the limbic, pre-frontal and thalamic regions. Because the frontal area is responsible for attention, impulse control and social interaction regulation, frontal lobe underactivity has become highly suspect for the genetic orientation of ADHD.
