It is one of the most common psychiatric disorders facing children. Although some question whether or not the condition has an actual biological basis or is simply a social fabrication perpetuated on our youth by of overzealous parents, frustrated educators, and an unethical pharmaceutical industry; the fact is that psychiatric nurses are frequently faced with managing these patients needs. Fully understanding the circumstances determining diagnosis and the many questions about the legitimacy of the condition is critical to providing the most effective address to patients. The intent of this paper is to critique three specific studies designed to identify some of the incongruities that exist in regard to diagnosing and treating ADHD. These studies are "National estimates and factors associated with medication treatment for childhood attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder" by Visser, Lesesne and Perou (2007), "Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Among Adolescents: A Review of the Diagnosis, Treatment, and Clinical Implications" by Wolraich, Wibbelsman, Brown, Evans et. al. (2005) and "Self-Regulation Interventions for Children With Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder" Reid, Trout, and Schartz (2005). In a study of nationally representative survey data from 79,264 individuals between the ages of four to seventeen, Visser, Lesesne and Perou (2007) report that an estimated five to eighteen percent of youth in the US are diagnosed with ADHD and most receive some sort of medication for the condition. As might be expected, the literature consistently reports many common symptoms of this condition that translate into poor performance in school, the workplace, and in society in general. Visser, Lesesne and Perou (2007, p. S99) report, for example, that those suffering from the condition are more prone to "academic failure, motor vehicle crashes, substance abuse, and illegal behavior".
