Ritalin. Adolescents and adults may also take Ritalin or other drugs including Prozac and Paxil when diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. The most common behavior problems afflicting youngsters ages five through adolescence
are disorders that involve hyperactivity, distractibility and inattention. The symptoms related to these kinds of disorders account for an aggregate of nearly 40 percent of all referrals for psychoeducational evaluation
in schools (Stanford and Hynd, 1994) and to guidance clinics and mental health agencies (Wheeler and Carlson, 1994). The greatest majority of these children carry the label of "Attention Deficit
Disorder" (Wheeler and Carlson, 1994). Attention Deficit Disorder, or ADD as it is more commonly referred to, is considered to be a maladaptive condition that causes the child, adolescent or
adult to be disruptive in the academic, social, and work areas of ones life. The second most often diagnosed is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, ADHD. Based on the numbers
children allegedly with ADD/ADHD, the condition could easily be considered an epidemic. It would seem that with such a large percentage of the population identified as ADD/ADHD, professional counselors and
educators would wonder why so many children have this disorder. It would also seem that some would wonder if many of the individuals are misdiagnosed. Having 5 percent of the
nations children between the ages of 5 and 11, all diagnosed with the same disorder should cause significant amount of concern. Unfortunately, based on a literature search and the continued
