definite shortage of labor. One of these areas involves nursing. This is nothing new - nursing has always been somewhat difficult to
fully staff; finding qualified, trained nurses continues to be a challenge for many health care institutions. In this particular paper, well take the
typical hospital, ABC Hospital, which is experiencing a critical nursing shortage, especially in its medical-surgical units. Well examine the causes for the nursing shortage and then develop a recruitment and
retention plan to attract qualified nurses to the hospital. Why the Shortage? One issue that many health care institutions face is not so
much the lack of qualified candidates out there as much as its trying to find a way to keep them around for a while.
One problem along these lines is burnout. Race and Skees (2010) point out that certain specialties of nursing, such as critical care, can lead to high rates of
burnout and frustration. Nursing is an emotional practice; a good nurse is very involved in his/her patients wellbeing and such an emotional attachment can take its toll emotionally.
Another issue is that of inexperience. Because nursing tends to be such a high turnover field, new graduates are frequently hired to take on
many rigorous duties of nursing (Race and Skees, 2010). Because these graduates havent been "seasoned," and are going into these situations with high hopes and idealism, they are frequently disappointed.
