2005, p. 95). In the 1980s, physicians and psychologists formulated the description of attention deficit disorder (ADD) in order to describe the behavior of children who had difficulty focusing their
attention. It was noted that children with ADD were almost universally hyperactive as well. Consequently, today, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the term that is most frequently used to describe this
syndrome (Caldwell, et al, 2005). For the sake of brevity, the term ADHD will be used in this examination to refer to both ADD and ADHD. Three subtypes of ADHD
are described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV). These are "hyperactive-impulsive type, inattention type, and
combined type" (Caldwell, et al, 2005, p. 95). Hyperactivity has been defined as "interrupting other childrens play; running, climbing, or leaving a seat when quiet behavior...is expected; affinity toward in-motion
activity...; excessive talking; sudden emotional outbursts..." (Caldwell, et al, 2005, p. 95). Capano, et al, define ADHD as a "childhood onset neuropsychiatric disorder," which is characterized by "developmentally inappropriate and
impairing levels of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity" (Capano, et al, 2008, p. 393). How it affects learning ADHD is often associated with other learning disabilities, as well as placing the
affected children at risk for developing anxiety and depression (Capano, et al, 2008). In general, the behaviors associated with ADHD make it problematic for these children to focus their
attention long enough to learn. Therefore, these students exhibit "deficient study skills," as well as "general disorganization," which not only causes them to experience academic difficulty, but their behavioral problems
