the headline "Goddess of Love." The student needs to tell the readers that this particular print ad promotes Gillettes Venus Embrace, which is the first five-blade razor to target women.
The student can also throw in extra information, such as the fact that Gillettes owner, Procter & Gamble, launched a large ad campaign in 2009 to roll out this particular
new product (Newman, 2009). The student can explain that the purpose of the campaign is to play on Venus, the Roman goddess of love, while portraying contemporary women in contemporary
settings as "deities" of today (Newman, 2008). The student can also point out that other ads in the campaign include the "Goddess of Trailblazing" (which portrays a woman running with
a jogging stroller) and the "Goddess of Communication" (in which a woman is shown sending a text message) (Newman, 2009). The student can
note that "Goddess of Love" is different from these other two, as it shows a woman in an intimate setting with a man with whom she is obviously close. The
other two advertisements mentioned above show women who are busy and active, rather than relaxed and composed, as the woman is in this particular advertisement.
The man in this ad could be her boyfriend or husband, but it doesnt matter - what we get from this picture is that these two know each
other fairly well. The woman is cuddling with the man, cradled in his lap, in a chair large enough to hold the both of them. Both are in light colored
clothes, while the background, and lighting, are darker. The scene is lovely , cozy and just about everything that a woman might dream of in an ideal relationship.
