the scrutiny that is paid to the attainment levels. However, despite the attention there are still many influences on achievement that may not yet be fully understood. There are
many potential influences that can impact on ACT scores, understanding these can help ensure that students are able to maximise their potential and help them get good collage places. There
has been speculation over some of these influences which have included the quality and experience of the teachers, the economic background of the students and the size of the classes.
The aim of this paper is to assess the correlation between these factors and the academic performance of the students. 2. Background There are different measures of attainment used for
children, one of these is the ACT test, this is the most widely accepted collage entrance exam. The aim is to assess the general knowledge with the use of a
range of multiple test questions covering maths, science, English and reading. In addition to this there is also a short optional written exam to test planning and essay writing abilities.
This is one of the most generalised measures of student attainment, and as it is widely used can be utilized as an indicator of student attainment levels. Using the
scores of the ACT multiple choice tests as the dependant variable a range of independent variables can be tested to asses if they appear to have any significant impact on
the ACT scores. Data has been collected from 168 school districts1, the data includes the number of students taking the test and the composite test score. In addition to this
data was collected regarding the average teacher salaries in the area and the number of students that receive free school meals and the number of students enrolled in the area.
