uses rhythm and meter in a way that is very conversational, almost like prose or blank verse as opposed to other poets. In his poem, Acquainted with the Night, the
clear rhythm is used for several reasons, as are his use of metaphor, irony, and symbolism. I have been one acquainted with the night.
I have walked out in rain - and back in rain. I have outwalked the furthest city light(Frost).
Quite literally in this first stanza one receives the picture of someone who is accustomed to walking in the night, regardless of weather or distance. In Frosts poems, quite often
he alludes to some characteristic of nature, but in one should not be fooled into thinking that Frosts poems are nature poems. In fact, when he alludes to Nature he
is specifically targeting something of a spiritual nature. So, the fact that he is mentioning someone who is on a constant journey is significant, and doubly so since this person
is speaking about the walking he has done in the dark. Given Frosts background and lifes history it is a safe bet that this poem is about death. He speaks
about having gone out in rain and back again, which represents sorrow and tears. In other words, he has seen many people pass away, has grieved and made his way
back from grief. The fact that he has out walked every city light may indicate that he has at times gone beyond the point where there seemed to be any
hope, any light to be found. I have looked down the saddest city lane. I have passed by the watchman on his beat
