one place. Water pollution, which spreads, is still confined to lakes and rivers that are within legitimate range of pollution-causing agents. Acid rain, however, isnt contained within borders - if
it is caused in one country from polluting agents, it can impact the environment in a country far away, simply by its very nature. While some global organizations are trying
to reduce acid rain through education, the problem still persists. In order to understand acid rain, its important to understand how it
is created, as it is an atmospheric condition. The atmosphere itself consists of a thin film of gases that envelopes the planet and helps make it a place where creatures
can survive (Environmental Information, 2002). However, when pollutants in the form of gases travel high enough into the atmosphere, they condense and cause acid rain which, over time, can damage
forests, lakes rivers, plants, animals - and mankind (Environmental Information, 2002). Rainfall itself is naturally acid because it absorbs carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and contains a weak carbonic acid
with a pH measurement between 5 and 6 (Environmental Information, 2002). But when the rain absorbs other types of oxides such as sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides (resulting from burning
of fossil fuels from coal-powered plants and automobiles), the pH scale, which measures acidity, drops, meaning a component is more acidic (Environmental Information, 2002). Acid rain typically has a pH
of around 3 (Environmental Information, 2002). But acid rain is not necessarily only rain - it can come in the form of
mist, snow and even dry deposition, which refer to pollutants that are deposited on the environment before they have a chance to be absorbed by moisture in the atmosphere (Environmental
