Ever since the invention of the printing press (and even before), there have been those who, for whatever their reasons, decide to pawn anothers work as their own or dont
have any scrupulousness about cheating on exams or tests. In recent years, however, the Internet has aided and abetted plagiarism and cheating.
Its all too easy, these days, to Google a source, then cut and paste that information into a paper without proper citation or attribution.
Is this so bad, though? In a world in which it seems as though everyone else cheats (take a look at the headlines and we can see how
prevalent this is), why is ripping off information from the Internet or taking a peek at another students paper during a test such a bad thing?
The answer to this is that cheating, or plagiarizing, is stealing. Interestingly enough, though, students who wouldnt think about going into a store to shoplift or who
wouldnt dream of pulling a gun on another person to rob him/her see little wrong when it comes to swiping someone elses words or documents.
In a "good-news-bad-news" scenario, a recent study among 1,222 graduate students at a higher educational institution in the United Kingdom showed that three-fifths of those polled said they
had engaged in moderate online cheating off the Internet during the past 12 months (Selwyn, 2008). The positive side of this, if there is one, was that these students also
