especially when that technology deals with biomedical issues. One of these biomedical issues is that of abortion. Lloyd Steffens book, Abortion: A Reader, is a collection of 48 essays outlining the various perspectives, pro and con, secular and sacred, on the topic. Why the heated debate about abortion? Part of the reason is that there is still no consensus as to when life begins. Does it begin at conception, as many Christians and religious movements believe? Or, does life only begin at birth? This is the bottom line which runs through all of the arguments presented in Steffens book. For the most part, though it is easy to discern the Christian rhetoric pervading the entire book, that Steffen has attempted to present the debate and the entire scope of the problem in as non-biased a way as possible. And, the big surprise is that as a Christian author, he does not completely embrace the Christian party line where abortion is concerned. "Because of anti-abortion legislation, women avoid going to the hospital, often until it is too late, to avoid prosecution from police. In the cases of rape and incest, the very idea of being forced to have the child of the womans abuser is repulsive. There are also cases when a womans health is put in jeopardy by having a child at all. Forcing a woman to bring the child to term would be no less than attempted murder" (Steffen 1996, pg. 49). For the most part, it would seem that the lines have been drawn quite cleanly. Either one is pro-life or one is pro-choice.
