The Aboriginal Creation Myth also serves the purpose of exampling the value systems and beliefs of the culture from which it comes. In the Creation Story of the Aboriginals in Australia, the Sun Mother is wakened by the Father of All Spirits to go down to Earth and wake up the spirits of the place. Mother goes to Earth and creates the plants, the insects, the waters, and all of the various animals on the planet. All live in peace for a while until envy sets in and each animal finds something to dislike about itself. Trying to calm their fears, the Sun Mother grants them the ability to change into any shape they choose. Unfortunately, she realizes that giving them this ability has assumed that they would know what was best for them, and they do not. To make amends for this, she gives birth to two beings: the Morning Star and the Moon. As her children, she sends them to Earth to rule over the Earth in her stead. The Morning Star and the Moon are the first human beings. What one may infer from this story is that several character traits are highly prized in this culture. Light, represented by Mother Sun, seems to sustain and nurture everything. Even when she goes down into the caverns and caves, life is born. This could also be taken to mean light as the form of honesty. Being truthful sustains and nurtures the culture. Many of these creation stories come from what the Aboriginals call, Dreamtime.
