with the stories of three women, three generations. They are primarily of Native American heritage and as such their lives offer the reader an understanding of how difficult it is to find a place for oneself in the midst of change. In the following paper we examine the character of Christine, the second generation woman in the novel, and discuss how her life reflects a need to be accepted. Christine As the section of Christine begins we see that she is a youth who has lost faith in Christianity and thus begins her search for meaning and acceptance. We see her possess and incredible relationship with her brother, which is perhaps the only relationship she ever knows where she is truly accepted. But, as she grows up and the two drift apart somewhat, that safety of being accepted begins to diminish and she searches further. She becomes very rebellious and sexually promiscuous with boys, getting a reputation for being popular due to her open minded nature. But, it is only really a cry for acceptance, for a sense of stability and a knowledge that she belongs somewhere which pushes her to these actions. After she graduates she holds down a job as a clerk in the tribal office. She is still close with her brother in many ways, but is very distant from the rest of the world, even those men whom she has relationships with who try to show her the big city. Clearly she knows that she does not belong in the big city, or in that sort of mentality. She is lost at this point as she seems unaware of what she wants from life. Her situation does not improve as she hates any kind of menial labor and finds herself moving ...
