is a story that seems to go no particular place yet offers the reader a very vivid picture of a woman and her journey. The following paper examines the difference between a journey and a goal as seen in this story. The paper also examines what kind of person the woman, Phoenix, is and how the reader can tell what kind of a person she is. A Worn Path by Eudora Welty In first looking at what a journey is as opposed to a goal, or a destination, a journey is something that one essentially enjoys. It is not always getting to a destination that is important, but rather the trip to a particular destination. In this particular story this is very obvious, in relationship to the goal not being imperative, because it is not till the end that the reader actually understands where it is she is going. The reader sees the journey as opposed to the goal because the narrator is constantly illustrating what she has come upon, or some achievement she has made in the journey. For example, in the beginning one can see this as the narrator states, "The path ran up a hill" and the woman said, "Seem like there is chains about my feet, time I get this far,...Something always take a hold of me on this hill- pleads I should stay" (Welty). There is no indication of where she is going, although the reader knows she has been on this path, obviously a worn path, many times. With each part of the journey, one she knows well, she is clearly immersed in the journey itself. She states, at one point, " "Now comes the trial" which indicated that she was familiar with the trail and that she was accustomed ...
