Discussion Its so well known its become a clich?: we all have a Dark Side. In Jungian psychology its called the Shadow, and refers to that part of us that we dont like much. This is the side of our personality that does bad things, deliberately hurts others, and makes us ashamed. Its the part of us that we keep deep inside, hiding it from everyone; but we also know, from many psychological studies, that repressing something usually has the effect of making it stronger, wilder, less able to be controlled. It can take away our sense of balance. This is precisely what happens to Ged, the young wizard who is the hero of LeGuins novels. The great mage Ogion recognizes that Ged has power, and takes the young man as his apprentice; after a time, he offers Ged the choice of staying with him or going to the Island of Roke to learn even more magic. Not surprisingly, Ged chooses to go to Roke; while there, he is taught the idea of Equilibrium and warned not to do anything until he knows what the effect of his action will be: "... you must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act. The world is in balance, in Equilibrium" (LeGuin 44).
