out of his trip to Africa resulted the classic book, Heart of Darkness. This book, the student will want to point out in his introduction, makes pointed statements about
race, imperialism, and the dark side of the human soul. But this would not be the only book of its kind, as many years later, a story called, Apocalypse Now,
would join Heart of Darkness in the defining and necessity for the dark side of mankind. The majority of Heart of Darkness takes place as a flashback by a character
named Marlowe, who is a sailor aboard an English ship. He begins to speak with a group of the passengers who are struck by his odd perspective. He tells them
that in all his travels, he reckons London and most of Europe to be the darkest places on the face of the Earth. In order to expound upon his statements,
he begins to tell of his trip to Africa and into The Heart of Darkness. He describes the trip as being a long and troublesome one, but finally they arrive
at the station. He does not meet his immediate supervisor, Kurtz, but another man, instead, who leaves Marlow with a very uncomfortable feeling. To make matters worse, the ship that
he was supposed to have picked up at this station has broken down, so he is delayed. He tries to make himself busy and during this time continues to hear
Kurtzs name mentioned, but he never sees the man. Marlow believes that Kurtz must be ill. When Marlow and the crew find the native village, and Kurtz, it is true
that Kurtz is very ill. The become friends, to an extent, and Kurtz gives all of his secret files to Marlow, along with a picture of his fianc? in London.
