hot dogs and friesiii. A&W was founded in 1919 by Roy Allen, who opened his first root beer stand in Californiaiv.
He partnered with Frank Wright in 1922, and the two used their initials to launch A&W Root Beerv. In 1994, Sidney Feltenstein purchased the A&W chain from Alfred Taubman and
five years later, Feltenstein formed the Yorkshire Global Restaurants to oversee both A&W and the acquisition of Long John Silversvi. After that, Yum! acquired Yorkshire for $320 millionvii.
It wasnt all easy for A&W however. At one point, the company suffered decades of corporate problems, forcing thousands of outlets to closeviii. Yet
beginning in 1995, the company began to reinvent itself, providing a new look and new services - part of the reason for this was the quick-serve burger and root beer
concept as well as solid, innovative partnerships with franchiseesix. Thanks to such partnerships, and a great deal of give-and-take, A&W was able to emerge from its doldrums to become a
