people different from chimpanzees? It is more than a few genes. Rather, it is mans ability to reason. Now, in addition to those deemed as philosophers, writers have delved into
the area. Molieres Tartuffe exemplifies the importance of reason ironically by demonstrating the unreasonable. While most of the play is absurd, there does seem to be a voice of
reason amidst the chaos, which is none other than Cleantes. In the classic work, a confidence man by the name of Tartuffe endears
himself to another called Orgon (Nissani 307). Orgon is a middle-aged Parisian who is quite wealthy (307). Cleante is Orgons brother in law. In any event, Tartuffe slowly but surely
becomes in important person in Orgons life and in spite of Tartuffes impoverished state and questionable past, he is Orgons new trusted friend (307). While Orgons grown children, maid, young
second wife and brother-in-law each see through Tartuffes charade, Orgon does not take their advice, and goes on to worship Tartuffe, even in the face of evidence that he is
less than trustworthy (307). Orgons allegiance to his new friend is strong. Orgon believes that his familys conduct goes to jealousy or
