group of four offsite programmers for the tax accountant firm of T.A. Stearns has developed, shared and used a shortcut to programming that saves them much time in their work
and improves quality at the same time. The originator of the macro shortcut shared the technique with others in the group but swore them to secrecy in an effort
to protect one of the four programmer positions. The time savings generated by the technique is such that the company would be able to eliminate one of the positions
without negatively affecting the company. Diagnosis The primary problem here is that none of the programmers holds enough loyalty to the company to
go forward with the new technique and so save the company the salary of one of the programmers. This is not an example of someone developing a technique that
helps only him; Cy readily shared the time-saver with the other programmers in the group. This could be a fear reaction on the
part of all the programmers. They have managed to reduce variation in their work and so increase quality, a concept promoted by Deming (1986).
Two of the programmers considered entering the technique as an employee suggestion, for which the company pays cash awards. The value of the award was not as
great as the value of added free time, however. Prescription The programmers manager could choose to do nothing at all about the situation
that has developed. This could be to his advantage in that his own managers should note an increase in quality and decrease in work time required for project completion
