society, there are many instances where the law has outlawed some behavior that many citizens tend to feel should be entirely unregulated on the grounds that the behavior is a
personal moral choice rather than a matter that is more appropriately regulated by the state. Key examples include the war on drugs, as well as prostitution. In the case of
the latter, for example, prostitution has nearly always been outlawed in the United States and many other nations around the world, and yet many argue that there is no reason
for its illegal status, that in fact legalizing it would yield positive net benefits for society as a whole. Critics such as Yolanda Estes argue that prostitution should remain illegal
because of its promotion of objectification of women, while others, such as Nussbaum, claim that this is not a valid grounds through which to support the illegalization of the activity.
As such, the case of prostitutions legal status makes it an excellent venue in which to observe the practice of ethical philosophy at work. This paper will adopt the paradigm
of utilitarian ethics in order to explore the issue of the legalization of prostitution, arguing that Nussbaum is correct in that its legalization would produce the benefits of a safer
society, increased tax revenue, and the empowerment of the individuals involved in prostitution. This paragraph helps the student begin to explore the various social benefits that could result from
