on the "inside." Discussion The overwhelming impression a reader gets from these accounts is that the system is a horrible waste. Prisoners are treated like animals for the most part,
but what really stands out is the boredom. There are only limited activities available, for the rest of the time they sleep, or read or write, desperately trying to make
the time go faster. The three accounts come from three very different sources: a former U.S. Senator convicted of mail fraud and serving a sentence in a minimum-security facility; a
woman in prison in Texas; and a death row inmate. The first inmate is Charles Walker, who is serving a 10-year sentence in the "Federal Correctional Institute in Estill, South
Carolina," which is approximately two hours from August, Georgia (Myers, 2007). Walker is serving his sentence in a "satellite camp" to the main prison, which houses perhaps 300 inmates (Myers,
2007). There are no cells here; instead, the inmates are housed in four-man "dorm room" cubicles (Myers, 2007). At the facility a separate building has a "barber, counselors, library and
commissary" that has approximately the same stock as a grocery store (Myers, 2007). Walkers day begins with an "inmate check at 5 a.m.," after which he cleans the room, which
is his "job," apparently, in the prison (Myers, 2007). After that, he goes to the exercise room from 12.00 - 1.30 p.m., doing weight training and aerobics, a routine he
follows every day (Myers, 2007). He spends 2-3 hours in the library in the afternoon, reading and writing, often reading material about his own case (Myers, 2007). Following that, he
walks the track in late afternoon for more exercise (Myers, 2007). There is a television available, but Walker doesnt watch it often, as he prefers to spend his nights writing
